The need to evaluate and readjust efforts to combat human trafficking was highlighted by the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, during the last meeting of the Council of Ministers. This commitment was concretized by the creation of an agency specializing in the prevention and fight against this scourge.
Human trafficking is a major problem that causes great concern, both for the security of the State and for the well-being of the population. Thus, the Head of State placed emphasis on the adoption of a national strategy for the prevention and fight against human trafficking, the publication of specific directives, as well as the promulgation of a new law to strengthen prevention and treatment of this crime.
In its June 2023 report, the United States classified the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as Tier 2, recognizing the significant efforts made in the fight against human trafficking. However, despite these advances, it is necessary for the government to make greater commitment to guarantee respect and application of the laws in this area.
Various organizations have urged the Congolese state to devote more resources to protecting victims and preventing human trafficking, in order to move towards the complete elimination of this scourge.
It is important to emphasize that human trafficking is not only limited to sale and sexual exploitation, but also includes other forms of exploitation such as forced labor, organ trafficking, servitude and modern slavery.
As a society, it is our duty to strongly condemn these practices and raise public awareness of this reality. The fight against human trafficking requires close coordination between state actors, civil society and international organizations, in order to put in place effective measures for prevention, repression and protection of victims.
In conclusion, the DRC has made significant progress in the fight against human trafficking, but there is still much to do. Political will and commitment from all stakeholders are essential to continue fighting this heinous crime and ensure a safer and fairer future for all.
