ONAPAC news: Summary of the Board of Directors meeting and challenges ahead
The Memling Hotel hosted the second session of the meeting of the Board of Directors of the National Office of Agricultural Products of Congo (ONAPAC) for the year 2023. Under the direction of Me. Muke Mukengeshayi, President of the Board of Directors administration, this meeting brought together the Director General, the Administrators and the Secretary General of ONAPAC, as well as the Representative of the Minister of Agriculture.
During his communication to the media, the PCA Me. Muke Mukengeshayi returned to the context of this meeting and the missions of ONAPAC. He recalled that ONAPAC only deals with around twenty agricultural products intended for export, such as coffee, cocoa, rubber, cinchona, papaya, vanilla and medicinal plants. He stressed that ONAPAC’s mission is to supervise the production chain, from machining to export, including warehousing and transit.
However, the PCA also expressed the difficulties that ONAPAC faces. He revealed that out of an annual budget of 15 million dollars, ONAPAC only manages to mobilize 3 million dollars, or only 20% of the necessary funds. This situation hampers the proper functioning of the company, with consequences on the salaries of employees who do not benefit from their 100% remuneration.
In addition to these financial difficulties, the PCA also alerted to the delaying tactics of certain members of the Congolese Business Federation (FEC) aimed at reducing the advantages granted to ONAPAC. He stressed that these maneuvers endanger the very existence of ONAPAC and requested the support of the Minister of Agriculture to counter these actions.
This meeting of the ONAPAC Board of Directors highlights the challenges that the Office faces in its role of supervision and promotion of Congolese agricultural products intended for export. It is essential to find solutions to ensure the financial viability of ONAPAC and guarantee the proper functioning of this key institution for the development of the agricultural sector in the DRC.
