The terrible consequences of the war in Sudan continue to be felt, with a new tragic episode. On November 5, more than 20 civilians were killed and many others injured in Omdurman, a suburb near Khartoum, following shells falling on a crowded market. This new attack, which comes on top of a long series of acts of violence, shows once again the extent of the suffering inflicted on the civilian population in this conflict which has lasted for almost ten years.
According to information reported by the Pro-Democracy Lawyers Committee, fighting between the armed forces and paramilitaries was particularly intense that day, leading to shells falling on the market. These indiscriminate attacks undoubtedly demonstrate the vulnerability of civilians who find themselves trapped in a spiral of violence of which they are the first victims.
Since the start of the war in April, the human toll figures have continued to rise. The death toll is now estimated at more than 9,000, although experts say this figure is largely underestimated. Thousands of people have been displaced, fleeing the fighting and seeking refuge in neighboring countries, while others are being kidnapped into slavery every day.
Faced with this dramatic situation, the international community must take its responsibilities and provide significant humanitarian aid to relieve the suffering of the affected populations. Unfortunately, current UN funding to respond to this crisis is insufficient, reaching barely a third of what is needed. It is essential that donor countries do more to provide the necessary financial assistance to meet the growing needs of victims of this conflict.
At the same time, it is urgent that the parties to the conflict truly engage in serious negotiations with a view to a lasting ceasefire and a peaceful resolution. Previous attempts at mediation have so far failed, with truces regularly violated. It is time for Generals al-Burhan and Daglo to put aside their personal interests and show real leadership to end this destructive war.
In conclusion, the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with brutal attacks against the civilian population resulting in death and destruction. It is imperative that the international community intensify its efforts to provide adequate humanitarian assistance and that the conflicting parties seriously engage in a peace process. The people of Sudan deserve to return to the peace, security and dignity to which they are entitled.
