“The Democratic Republic of Congo takes a major step towards Universal Health Coverage thanks to the operationalization of the law on the organization of Public Health”

Public health is a major issue in every country, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is no exception. This is why the Ministry of Health, Hygiene and Prevention organized a workshop aimed at the operationalization of the law on the organization of Public Health in the DRC. This law, modified and supplemented by Ordinance-Law No. 23/006, establishes the fundamental principles of Universal Health Coverage and the implementation of the International Health Regulations.

During this workshop, which took place from September 29 to 30, 2023, senior officials and lawyers worked on identifying the legal needs necessary for the implementation of these texts. They stressed the importance of taking enforcement measures to ensure universal health coverage and health security.

The Minister of Health, Hygiene and Prevention declared that this establishment of the Universal Health Coverage system in the DRC is irreversible and constitutes one of the key promises of President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.

The experts present developed a roadmap for the drafting and adoption of enforcement measures. They also agreed to the establishment of a technical commission responsible for supervising the implementation of this roadmap.

These implementation measures are essential to guarantee the effective implementation of the Universal Health Coverage system in the DRC. They will make it possible to define the services involved and the concrete actions to be implemented.

This initiative demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to improving health services and ensuring adequate care for the entire population. Universal Health Coverage is an essential objective to guarantee access to care for all, regardless of their socio-economic status.

In conclusion, the operationalization of the law on the organization of Public Health in the DRC is a crucial step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage. Through the implementation of adequate enforcement measures, the Congolese government aims to provide more accessible and better quality health services to its entire population.
