The Internet has revolutionized the way we obtain information and interact with the world around us. Social media in particular has played a major role in this change, providing users with the opportunity to connect, share information and express their opinions.
However, with the rise of social networks, new questions arise regarding their regulation. Digital platforms have a tremendous influence on society, with billions of individuals using these platforms daily. This raises concerns about the management of content disseminated on these platforms, particularly with regard to disinformation and hate speech.
It is in this context that the National Communication Council of the Republic of Cameroon is organizing an International Forum on the regulation of social networks. The objective of this event is to bring together African media regulators and representatives of digital platforms to discuss ways of effective collaboration to regulate social networks.
The organizers recognize the importance of digital platforms in our society, but also emphasize the need to ensure that activity on these platforms is consistent with the public interest and social order. The objective is to find solutions to combat disinformation and hate speech, while preserving freedom of expression.
For two days, participants will meet in workshops to discuss topics such as the management of content policies of digital platforms, measures to combat disinformation and hate speech, and modalities of collaboration between digital platforms and media regulators.
It is essential to carry out these reflections, both at the regional and national level, to find solutions to the evolving online media landscape. It is important to distinguish between the work of online media and the speculation circulating on social media, in order to allow public opinion to have a clear understanding of the situation.
At the end of the forum, a general report will be published, as well as a declaration from Yaoundé and a vote of thanks from the Network of African Communication Regulatory Bodies to the government of Cameroon.
In conclusion, the regulation of social networks is a major issue in our digital society. Holding this international forum will reflect on best practices for effective collaboration between media regulators and digital platforms, in order to guarantee a healthy and secure online environment for all users.
