Rwanda hosts 23rd World Travel and Tourism Council Global Summit

From November 1 to 3, 2023, Rwanda has the honor of hosting the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council. This international event, organized for the first time on African soil, brings together major players in the tourism sector.

This conference, organized by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), brings together more than 1,000 participants from 45 different countries, including high-level representatives such as Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu and Burundian Vice-President Prosper Bazombanza .

The choice of Rwanda to host this summit is a recognition of the country’s tourism potential and the importance of Africa in the travel and tourism sector. Indeed, tourism plays a crucial role in the continent’s economy, generating more than 200,000 direct jobs in Rwanda.

The year 2023 also marks a turning point for the tourism sector in Africa, with a promising post-pandemic recovery. Estimated revenues for this year stand at nearly $182 billion, returning to pre-pandemic levels. According to Julia Simpson, CEO of WTTC, the growth potential for the sector in Africa is enormous, with annual growth expected to be around 5% over the next decade. This could translate into more than $300 billion in revenue and nearly 36 million jobs by 2033.

However, to achieve these growth goals, certain obstacles must be overcome. Policymakers must invest in improving connectivity, both air and land, in Africa. They must also facilitate visa procedures, resolve skills and training issues, and support local communities.

Among the African countries with the greatest tourism potential are Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco. These countries have taken initiatives to develop their tourism sector and attract many international visitors every year.

In conclusion, the 23rd World Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council in Rwanda highlights the importance of the tourism sector in Africa and the desire to develop it. Through strategic investments and collaboration between local and international stakeholders, Africa can become a major tourism destination in the years to come.
