Henri Lopes: a tribute to a talented Congolese writer and politician
The world of literature and politics is in mourning with the death of Henri Lopes, which occurred on November 2, 2023 at the age of 86. A recognized writer and committed politician, he leaves behind a legacy that crosses borders and generations.
Born in Congo in 1937, Henri Lopes quickly established himself as one of the most talented figures in African literature. His fluid and captivating writing style has earned him the name “Latin Quarter of Central Africa” for his role in the development of the Congolese literary scene. Even during the era of Marxism-Leninism that prevailed at the time, his pen remained free and bold.
Politically involved from the first steps of Congo’s independence, Henri Lopes played a major role in the political scene of his country. In 1963, he was part of the revolutionary movement that overthrew Father Fulbert Youlou, the first president of independent Congo. He then held important ministerial positions, notably that of National Education and Finance, before becoming Prime Minister under the presidency of Marien Ngouabi between 1973 and 1975. Despite his political responsibilities, Henri Lopes never abandoned his passion for writing and continued to publish novels and historical works which contributed to enriching contemporary African literature.
Henri Lopes’ novels, such as “Le Pleurer-rire”, “My Bantu grandmother and my ancestors the Gauls” or “It’s already tomorrow”, have left their mark on people with their originality and their ability to explore the complex themes of identity, colonization and African history. His writing, imbued with poetry and finesse, has touched many readers around the world.
After leaving political life, Henri Lopes continued to play an important role in the cultural field as Congo’s representative at UNESCO. In 1998, he was appointed Congolese ambassador to France, a position he held for seventeen years. His commitment to his native country and its culture has been a source of inspiration for many Congolese artists and writers.
Despite a career full of achievements, Henri Lopes also experienced moments of disappointment. In 2002, he made an unsuccessful attempt to become Secretary General of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), but this did not tarnish his reputation as a talented writer and respected politician.
The death of Henri Lopes leaves a void in the world of literature and politics, but his legacy remains. Social networks were quickly filled with messages of condolence, paying tribute to this exceptional writer, author of the words of the national anthem.
Henri Lopes will forever be remembered as a brilliant writer, a committed politician and an ambassador of Congolese culture. His work continues to inspire us and remind us of the importance of freedom of expression and the appreciation of our cultural heritage. That his soul rests in peace.
