Press review of Wednesday, November 1, 2023: Presidential candidates denounce the lack of transparency in the electoral process
In political news in the Democratic Republic of Congo, seven candidates for the presidential election have published a joint statement to denounce the lack of transparency in the current electoral process. Moïse Katumbi, Martin Fayulu, Seth Kikuni, Delly Sesanga, Marie-Josée Ifoku, Franck Diongo and Denis Mukwege believe that urgent measures must be taken to save the electoral process, reports Africa News.
Among the points raised by these opponents are the financial, logistical and organizational constraints facing the elections, as well as the lack of clarity maintained by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). They warn of chaotic elections if these problems are not resolved.
The candidates also stress the importance of the inclusiveness of the polls, calling for the participation of the populations of Masisi, Rutshuru, Bunagana and Kwamouth, who have so far been excluded from these polls.
In reaction to this press release, the CENI affirmed that the electoral process continues in accordance with the laws and the established timetable. She also recalled that the display of voter lists will be done 15 days before the polls, as provided for by law.
This declaration by the candidates follows a series of challenges and controversies surrounding the electoral process in the DRC. The difficulties encountered by the CENI are inherent to the complexity of an electoral process in a large-scale country like the DRC. However, ensuring transparency and fairness is crucial to ensure the legitimacy of electoral results.
