“Storm Ciaran: red alert in the north-west quarter of France, violent winds and impressive waves expected”

Storm Ciaran is preparing to hit the north-western quarter of France with formidable intensity. Météo-France placed three departments on red alert from midnight on Wednesday, announcing gusts of up to 170 km/h. This “very strong autumn storm” is being closely monitored by the authorities, who have mobilized nearly 3,200 firefighters to deal with possible damage.

The departments affected by this red alert are Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor and Manche. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, specified that firefighters will be mobilized in six departments, including the four Breton departments as well as Manche and Loire-Atlantique.

Weather forecasts predict a storm of comparable intensity to that of 1999, with violent winds that could exceed 170 km/h and waves that could reach 10 meters in height. Risks of submersion are expected on the Atlantic coast and the English Channel.

Faced with this situation, the SNCF took preventive measures by interrupting the TER lines in the regions concerned as well as certain TGV lines. Brest airport will also be closed during the storm.

Authorities have appealed for caution and vigilance, recommending residents to put away items likely to be blown away by strong winds and to avoid non-essential travel.

This storm Ciaran reminds us of the importance of preparing for climatic hazards and respecting safety instructions. It is essential to be informed in real time of weather developments and to follow the recommendations of local authorities.

While we wait for the storm to pass, let us remain cautious and united in order to minimize the risks and consequences of this major meteorological event.
