Rehabilitation of the Kalundu-Kavimvira road: A vital step for the development of South Kivu

Rehabilitation works on the road between Kalundu and Kavimvira in Uvira, South Kivu

Rehabilitation work on the road section linking the public port of Kalundu to the Kavimvira roundabout, in the town of Uvira, in the province of South Kivu, is underway and is progressing normally. This is what our Radio Okapi reporter observed, two days after the launch of this work.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Public Works and Renovation (ITPR), Alexi Gisaro, who kicked off the work, it should last around 18 months. This rehabilitation specifically concerns around ten kilometers between Kalundu and Kavimvira. At the same time, other works have been launched from Nyantende and will continue towards the Ngomo escarpments on national road number 5 (RN5) to Kamanyola.

The rehabilitation of this road is a crucial step to improve traffic and connectivity in this region of South Kivu. Indeed, this axis is strategic for local economic development, because it connects the public port of Kalundu to various neighboring communities. This will facilitate the transport of goods and promote trade in the region.

Additionally, the rehabilitation of this road will also contribute to strengthening accessibility to basic services such as health facilities and schools. Residents will thus be able to benefit from a better quality of life thanks to better road connectivity.

However, it is important to note that the duration of the work may have a temporary impact on traffic in the area. Diversion and traffic management measures are therefore put in place to minimize disruption.

This rehabilitation of the road between Kalundu and Kavimvira is a significant step forward for the development of the South Kivu region. It demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting economic development in the country.
