Reforms undertaken in the industry sector: assessment and prospects
The Minister of Industry, Julien Paluku KAHONGYA, and his counterpart in Communication and Media, Government Spokesperson, Patrick MUYAYA KATEMBWE, held a press briefing this Tuesday, October 31 to take stock of the reforms undertaken in the sector industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In his introductory speech, Julien Paluku underlined the importance given by the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, to the development of the industrial sector in the DRC. Thus, concrete measures have been taken to divide the country into six industrial zones, including Kinshasa, the former Katanga, the Kasaï, Kivu, former Oriental and Equateur areas.
The establishment of a solid industrial policy has been a priority from the start of Julien Paluku’s mandate. According to him, it is imperative to have a clear policy to guide actions and investments in the sector.
With this in mind, an industrialization master plan was developed in 2021. It has six main components, including the development of road infrastructure to facilitate connectivity between provinces, the strengthening of energy infrastructure to support industrialization, the construction of railway segments to facilitate the transport of goods, the creation of special economic zones to enhance the economic potential of the country, and many other measures.
Julien Paluku also highlighted the progress made in the establishment of the fundamentals of the Ministry of Industry, such as the creation of the Industry Promotion Fund, the National Bureau of Studies and Industrial Planning, the the agency of special economic zones, and the Congolese Battery Council.
These reforms aim to create an environment conducive to investment and promote the industrial development of the DRC. By emphasizing economic diversification, industrialization will create jobs, develop local resources and reduce dependence on imports.
The Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick MUYAYA KATEMBWE, underlined the importance of communicating effectively on these reforms to raise awareness among the population and encourage national and international investors to engage in the industrial development of the country.
In conclusion, the reforms undertaken in the industrial sector in the DRC demonstrate the government’s desire to promote economic development and job creation through the industrialization of the country. With an ambitious industrialization master plan and the establishment of the necessary structures, the DRC is well on its way to becoming an attractive destination for investments in the industrial sector..
