Expulsions of families in Tangier: a land dispute amplified by a false rumor of a Jewish owner

In Morocco, the situation of family expulsions in Tangier is currently causing a lot of noise. Indeed, nearly 800 families in the Benkirane district face the imminent threat of seeing their homes destroyed. The rumor circulating is that of a Moroccan Jewish owner exiled in Israel who has returned and is demanding the return of his land. However, while the eviction proceedings are indeed real, the rumor in question is false.

It turns out in reality that the Jewish owner in question has not taken any steps in this direction and could himself be the victim of a case of land theft. This affair arouses strong emotion among residents who categorically refuse to see their homes destroyed. Local media and social networks seized on the story, spreading misinformation and stoking tensions.

However, it appears that it was Moroccans who initiated the eviction procedure and not the supposed Jewish owner. The residents of the neighborhood themselves conveyed this information, based on the memories of the former owner of the land. They also have solid evidence such as purchase, land conservation and tax payment documents.

In this context marked by tensions between Israel and Palestine, the false rumor continues to spread, amplified by social networks. Faced with this situation, the Tangier court decided to temporarily suspend the eviction procedure in order to clarify the ins and outs of this case, which could be yet another case of land spoliation.

It is essential to step back from this sensitive information and wait for the results of the investigations to know the true content of this matter. In the meantime, it is essential to preserve the right of the families concerned to decent housing and to enforce legal procedures to resolve this land dispute.
