The NGO Women’s Parliament recently organized the first edition of the Women’s Plenary in Kinshasa, an event that brought together women from different sectors to discuss the role of women in society. Patricia Matondo Mba, the president of the NGO, stressed the need to educate and raise awareness among women so that they can invest in areas where they are underrepresented, such as politics, law and ‘Higher Education.
The Minister of Gender, Family and Children, represented by Tango Belange, also expressed her support for the initiative and promised to set up a mentoring program to encourage the next generation of women leaders. She also mentioned the establishment of a map of women’s organizations in order to better coordinate the actions of the Ministry.
Claude Okondjo, Congolese writer and researcher in international law, stressed the importance of working in collaboration with women to build a better future. He insisted on the need to reconcile traditional values with modern challenges in order to enable women to fully contribute to the country’s development.
This event comes at a time when the representation of women in different fields still remains low in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A study by the Congolese Union of Media Women revealed a glaring imbalance in the ownership of media outlets, with only 7 women out of 30. Furthermore, statistics regarding the presence of women in Parliament and in the legal sector show alarming percentages.
The Women’s Plenary was therefore an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and strengthen their professional networks. Prizes were also awarded to more than 20 women who distinguished themselves in their respective fields.
This event is an important step in promoting gender equality in the DRC and encouraging the participation of women at all levels of society. It highlights the potential and skills of Congolese women and their importance in building a better future for the country..
