“Palestinian students in Tunisia: a glimmer of hope in a context of war”
In Tunisia, 519 Palestinian students have chosen to continue their studies in this country, which grants the largest quota of its international scholarships to these students. Often from Gaza, these young people are sent to Tunisia after obtaining their baccalaureate, in the hope of finding an environment more conducive to their academic development.
However, their journey is not without difficulties. The war in Gaza and the incessant bombings create permanent fear among these students, who live in fear of losing their loved ones. Essential resources, such as water and electricity, are in very short supply in their hometown, and distress is felt through food shortages.
In this article, we follow the testimony of Mohamed Abu Jabal and Mohamed Shafi, two journalism students who have been studying for three years in Tunis. The two young men share their concerns about the dire situation their family finds themselves in in Gaza. They describe the daily life of destruction, mourning and long hours of waiting to find something to eat.
Faced with this tragic reality, the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education has taken exceptional measures to help Palestinian students. Psychological assistance was put in place because many students lost loved ones during the bombings. Additionally, university hostels have been opened free of charge to accommodate students from Gaza who can no longer afford to pay their rent. A scholarship extension at Masters level was also proposed, given the uncertainty over their return to Gaza and the possibility of seeing their loved ones again.
In such a troubled context, Tunisia offers a haven of peace and opportunities for these Palestinian students. Despite trauma and difficulties, they continue their studies with determination, carrying hope for a better future.
