Urban violence: a firm plan to deal with it
Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced yesterday a firm plan to fight against urban violence which is rampant in certain sensitive areas. Faced with a crisis of authority which seems to affect many neighborhoods, the French government is taking concrete measures to restore order and security.
Among the measures announced, we find the creation of “republican action forces” made up of police officers, magistrates and social workers. These forces will be deployed in certain neighborhoods in order to ensure a reinforced presence and to be able to provide security, judicial, educational or social responses effectively.
At the same time, the government also wants to act on parental responsibility. Indeed, there is a resignation of certain parents in the face of their children’s drift. Thus, community service sentences will be offered to those who evade their educational duties. In addition, the government provides that parents are held financially responsible for damage caused by their children, whether they live with them or not, and whether they are separated or not.
These measures are part of a desire to re-establish authority and deal with the violence which mainly affects young delinquents. In order to reinforce this action, the municipal police will be able to carry out judicial police acts, with the agreement of the mayors concerned. This measure will broaden the scope of action of law enforcement and guarantee better security at the local level.
Finally, an envelope of 100 million euros will be released for the repair and reconstruction of buildings affected during urban violence. It is important to emphasize that many public buildings were damaged during these events, which constitutes a real affront to the Republic.
This firmness plan demonstrates the government’s desire to effectively combat urban violence and restore a climate of security in the affected neighborhoods. This is a strong response which aims to recivilize and empower all stakeholders concerned. It now remains to implement these measures and evaluate their effectiveness in the long term.
