“Suspension of food distributions in the Nyiragongo territory: a critical situation for the displaced”

The suspension of food distributions by the World Food Program (WFP) in the Nyiragongo territory following fighting between armed groups has raised serious concerns about the precarious living conditions of the displaced. Indeed, the suspension of food aid risks worsening the already difficult situation of the displaced, particularly in terms of accommodation and health care.

The WFP had started food distributions in the Kanyarutshinya and Munigi camps, which house thousands of displaced people who have fled conflicts in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru. However, due to recent clashes in the Nyiragongo region, WFP was forced to temporarily suspend its activities.

The humanitarian situation in the region has deteriorated significantly due to heavy rains in the current season. The displaced, already vulnerable, are exposed to bad weather and disease due to the destruction of their shelters and other material damage caused by the weather.

In addition, persistent insecurity and fighting have led to several human losses among the displaced, forcing others to wander without fixed shelter. North Kivu currently has around 2.4 million displaced people, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

It is essential that measures are taken to ensure the safety of the displaced and to quickly restore WFP food distributions. Humanitarian organizations and local authorities must work together to remedy this critical situation and provide vital support to the displaced who depend on this food aid. Stability and security in the region are essential to guarantee the well-being of conflict-affected populations.

In conclusion, the suspension of food distributions in the Nyiragongo territory accentuates the challenges that the displaced people face. Rapid and coordinated action is necessary to respond to urgent humanitarian needs and enable displaced people to rebuild their lives in more stable and secure conditions.
