Arbitrary arrests, restrictions on press freedom, attacks and harassment against political opponents: these are the concerns expressed by the organizations Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International in Niger since the coup d’état by the National Council for Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) in July 2023. These international NGOs are sounding the alarm over the deterioration of human rights in the country, highlighting the abuses committed by the authorities in place and their supporters.
Ousmane Diallo, Sahel researcher at Amnesty’s West Africa office, highlights the involvement of both the CNSP authorities and their supporters in these human rights violations. According to him, the discourse promoted by the CNSP and the impunity granted to those who define themselves as supporters of the transition have created a climate of tension conducive to abuse. He cites in particular the case of four women victims of sexual assault by young people patrolling roundabouts, a tangible example of the excesses caused by this situation.
Faced with this worrying situation, Ousmane Diallo calls on the authorities to be more vigilant and to respect the rights of journalists and civil society, central actors in Niger. He underlines the importance for the CNSP to show its commitment to the rule of law and freedoms by preserving the country’s democratic achievements.
This alarming situation highlights the challenges facing Niger since the coup. It is essential that the authorities take action to end these human rights violations and ensure the protection of every individual, regardless of their political beliefs. The stability and democracy of the country depend on it.
The international community must also remain vigilant and support initiatives aimed at promoting human rights in Niger, in order to encourage a peaceful transition to a more inclusive political system that respects human rights. Together, we can contribute to the creation of a Niger where the fundamental rights of each individual are protected and respected.
