“DRC and Zambia strengthen their critical raw materials value chains with support from the European Union”

The European Union is strengthening its strategic partnerships in critical raw materials value chains with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia. This initiative is part of the “Global Gateway” forum, which aims to promote transport connectivity and the sustainable development of value chains.

Finance, Situmbeko Musokotwane. These partnerships aim to develop sustainable value chains for critical raw materials, while creating quality local jobs.

One of the major projects of this collaboration is the development of the Lobito Corridor, which will connect southern DRC and the north-western part of Zambia to regional and global trade markets via the Lobito port in Angola. This transport corridor will improve the export opportunities of these countries, stimulate trade and promote the mobility of citizens.

The Global Gateway strategy will play a key role in implementing these partnerships, supporting concrete actions to be achieved by 2030. The MoUs establish cooperation in five areas, including channel integration sustainable values, mobilizing funds for infrastructure development, sustainable and responsible production, research and innovation, as well as capacity building to enforce relevant rules.

The development of the Lobito Corridor will require investments in transport infrastructure, measures to facilitate trade and economic development, as well as support to related sectors to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth in these African countries.

By establishing these strategic partnerships, the European Union is showing its commitment to the sustainable development of critical raw materials value chains, while strengthening trade links and transport connectivity between Europe and Africa. These initiatives promise to create new economic opportunities and contribute to the socio-economic development of the DRC and Zambia.
