Three Basins Summit: a global coalition for environmental preservation

From October 26 to 28, the summit of the three basins will be held in Brazzaville, in the Republic of Congo. A major event that will bring together the leaders of the Amazon, Congo and the Borneo-Mekong-Southeast Asia region. This coalition aims to strengthen scientific and technical cooperation, as well as to promote the preservation of ecosystems and the fight against climate change.

The three basins concerned represent 80% of the world’s tropical forests and are home to essential terrestrial biodiversity. This large-scale meeting is part of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and aims to restore no less than 350 million hectares of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

The main objective of the summit is to define a global governance plan and form a global alliance for the preservation of these three basins. It will also involve developing a common strategy, as well as a work program and a portfolio of investment projects to ensure sustainable financing through existing and future financial mechanisms.

The participation of the Democratic Republic of Congo in this summit is all the more important, given its major role in preserving ecosystems. The country has a rich and unique biodiversity, notably with its mountain gorilla reserves and its vast tropical forests.

The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of the DRC, Ève Bazaiba, underlines the importance of this participation, stressing that this will make it possible to raise specific concerns and find common solutions for the preservation of the environment.

Beyond the ecological aspect, this summit of the three basins is also an opportunity to strengthen links between the participating countries and to develop mutually beneficial cooperation. It also provides a platform for countries in these regions to make their voices heard in multilateral forums on environment, forests and climate.
