“The DRC and MONUSCO launch an accelerated withdrawal plan to strengthen the sovereignty and stability of the country”

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) recently launched a process to develop an accelerated, gradual and responsible withdrawal plan from the UN mission in the country. This decision follows Kinshasa’s request to reduce the presence of MONUSCO on Congolese territory.

During a joint press conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lutundula, announced that the DRC and MONUSCO will work together to propose a disengagement plan and put in place a withdrawal timeline which will begin at the end of December 2023.

This withdrawal process will be carried out in a progressive and responsible manner, in compliance with the commitments made by MONUSCO to the Congolese population. The practical arrangements for the handover and resumption of activities will also be discussed, so as to guarantee continuity of actions carried out by the UN mission in collaboration with traditional partners.

It is also planned to develop a plan for the gradual reduction of MONUSCO personnel. This step will ensure a smooth transition and strengthen the capacities of Congolese institutions to fully assume their role in the stability and development of the country.

This accelerated MONUSCO withdrawal process marks a key step in the consolidation of the sovereignty and autonomy of the DRC. It aims to promote confidence and national ownership of the challenges facing the country, while guaranteeing the continuity of actions carried out in collaboration with the international community.

The DRC is determined to fully assume its responsibilities and direct its future towards sustainable development and lasting stability. The withdrawal of MONUSCO will therefore be an opportunity to strengthen Congolese institutions, promote good governance and consolidate long-term peace.

The collaboration between the DRC and MONUSCO in the development of this withdrawal plan shows the desire of both parties to work together for the security, stability and development of the country. A new chapter is opening for the DRC, which will be able to count on the support of the international community in this crucial stage of its history.
