“Strengthening security in prison environments: Training in first aid procedures for prison staff”

Training in first aid in prison: a vital initiative for the safety of prisoners

In a desire to strengthen the security and well-being of prisoners, prison staff at Beni prison, in North Kivu, recently benefited from training in first aid techniques and actions. This initiative, organized by the MONUSCO prison administration support unit, enabled around fifty detainees to be trained in emergency measures.

During this training, participants learned essential actions such as cardiac massage, resuscitation and rescue actions in the event of respiratory distress. This knowledge will enable prison officers to provide immediate assistance in the event of a medical emergency, before medical services intervene.

Jolie Milamulo, prison guard, is delighted with this training and recognizes its importance: “It’s a big step for me as staff at this prison. This knowledge will allow me to make my contribution when inmates fall ill or faint, so as not to waste precious time. I will be able to alert and provide first aid thanks to the concepts I have acquired. I hope to not only be able to help within my department, but also to help other people, even in my family.”

Medical incidents in prison are not uncommon, and this training is a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and care of prisoners in the event of a health problem. Thanks to these new skills, prison staff will be able to intervene quickly and effectively, thus minimizing the risks to the lives of prisoners.

It is crucial to recognize the importance of these trainings in the prison environment, where medical resources may be limited. Providing prison officers with first aid knowledge significantly increases inmates’ chances of survival in the event of a medical emergency.

This first aid training initiative in a prison environment demonstrates the commitment to respecting the fundamental rights of prisoners, guaranteeing their safety and ensuring their well-being. It constitutes a crucial step towards improving detention conditions and promoting socially responsible reintegration.
