Title: Feathers sowing peace: when literature promotes cohabitation in the Great Lakes region
Introduction :
In a context marked by conflicts and inter-community violence, a literary conference entitled “Les plumes semeuses de peace” was held in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This cultural and scientific event brought together artists from the Great Lakes region, with the aim of discussing the contribution of literature to better cohabitation in the region. In addition, an anthology bringing together the writings of twenty Burundian, Rwandan and Congolese authors was presented during the conference, highlighting art as a means of promoting social cohesion between communities.
Literature for change:
The Great Lakes region, made up of Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC, shares a common history marked by conflicts and the suffering of the population. Despite the signing of peace agreements and the organization of elections, the situation remains fragile and living together remains a challenge. It is in this context that literature positions itself as a vector of change by offering stories that challenge consciences and promote reconciliation.
The anthology as a tool for transformation:
The anthology presented during the literary conference brings together the voices of twenty authors from the Great Lakes region. Their contribution makes it possible to highlight issues of general interest and to propose avenues for peaceful conflict resolution. By condensing their writings in a single work, the authors seek to raise readers’ awareness and provoke collective reflection on the social and political issues of the region. This anthology aims to carry a message of hope, carried by writers committed to peace.
Social cohesion as a common objective:
Beyond cultural and linguistic diversity, communities in the Great Lakes region share deep ties and common interests. However, social cohesion remains fragile due to past trauma and existing divisions. Literature, through its ability to touch emotions and arouse empathy, can play an essential role in strengthening social bonds and building a collective identity. The feathers sowing peace thus invite awareness and collective action in favor of better cohabitation in the Great Lakes region.
Conclusion :
The literary conference “Feathers sowing peace” in Bukavu highlighted the role of literature in building a more harmonious society. Through the anthology presented during this event, authors from the Great Lakes region demonstrate their commitment to peace and reconciliation. Literature thus offers a space for expression, dialogue and sharing, making it possible to transcend barriers and promote better cohabitation between communities.
