The Mistral in the Gulf of Guinea: a deterrent force against illicit trafficking

The Mistral in the Gulf of Guinea: a major asset in the fight against illicit trafficking

The Mistral, one of the largest boats in the French navy, is currently deployed in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea. This arrival sparked numerous comments on social networks, due to the context of military and diplomatic crises. We had the opportunity to interview Commander Olivier Roussille, captain of the Mistral, to learn more about the ship’s mission in this strategic region.

With its 200 meters in length and its 22,000 tonnes of steel, the Mistral is a real behemoth. It has an impressive reception capacity, being able to accommodate sixteen light helicopters, 110 armored vehicles and more than 400 soldiers. This firepower makes it a major asset in the fight against illicit trafficking rampant in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Mistral’s main mission is to secure the area by combating criminal activities such as maritime piracy, drug trafficking, illegal arms trade and illegal fishing. Commander Roussille underlines the importance of this mission, in an area where security issues are increasingly worrying. Indeed, the Gulf of Guinea is known to be one of the most dangerous areas for maritime navigation, with an increase in acts of piracy in recent years.

Thanks to its capacity to embark a large number of helicopters and armored vehicles, the Mistral is able to carry out reconnaissance and patrol operations on the high seas, thus making it possible to quickly identify suspicious activities. In addition, its deterrent presence is a key element in deterring criminals from venturing into the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.

This mission led by the Mistral is part of a long tradition of maritime cooperation between France and the countries of the region. Since 1990, the Corymbe mission has ensured the security of the seas in the Gulf of Guinea. The Mistral has taken over this mission and provides superior capacity to face current and future challenges.

In conclusion, the presence of the Mistral in the Gulf of Guinea is a strong signal of France’s desire to fight against illicit trafficking and guarantee the security of the seas in this strategic region. With its imposing size and impressive capabilities, the Mistral constitutes a major asset for effectively combating criminal activities that threaten the stability of the region.
