Tensions in South China Sea: Two collisions between Chinese ships and Philippine boats during a resupply mission
On October 22, two incidents shook the South China Sea, pitting Chinese ships against Philippine boats during a resupply mission for Manila’s troops in the Spratlys. These collisions reignited tensions between the two countries, while the United States reacted strongly by denouncing China’s “dangerous actions”.
The first incident was reportedly caused by Chinese Coast Guard Vessel 5203, which allegedly dangerously blocked the Philippine supply boat that was part of a contract with the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The Philippine authorities quickly condemned these irresponsible maneuvers.
China, for its part, downplayed the incident by speaking of a “light collision”. According to official statements, the Philippine boat ignored multiple warnings and deliberately crossed Chinese law enforcement in an unprofessional and dangerous manner. Accusations refuted by the Philippine government.
A second incident was also reported, involving a Philippine Coast Guard vessel that was escorting the resupply mission. This ship was reportedly struck by what Manila describes as a “Chinese maritime militia ship.” However, China accused the Philippine boat of intentionally causing the collision by premeditatedly backing toward a Chinese fishing vessel.
This series of incidents sparked a strong reaction from the United States, which supported the Philippines and sharply criticized China’s actions. In an official statement, the US State Department denounced these actions as “dangerous” and “in violation of international law”.
These incidents occur against a backdrop of territorial claims in the South China Sea. China asserts its sovereignty over this area, much to the dismay of the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia, which also have interests in the region. China notably ignores an international judgment from 2016 which is not favorable to it.
These new incidents highlight the risks of collision in the South China Sea and the fragility of the political situation in this disputed region. Experts warn of an escalation of tensions and call for a peaceful resolution of disputes. US involvement in the region could also further complicate the situation, given its alliance with the Philippines.
It is essential to closely monitor developments in the South China Sea, as tensions do not appear to be dissipating and could have significant consequences for regional stability.
