Conference on architecture and housing: a step towards resilient communities
On October 21, 2023, the city of Butembo, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, hosted the second conference on architecture and housing. Organized by the Institute of Building and Public Works (IBTP) in collaboration with a consortium of students, this event was part of the international day of architecture and habitat. This year’s main theme was “architecture for resilient communities”.
During this conference, many architects and urban planners took the floor to discuss the importance of architecture in improving the quality of life of populations. They also addressed the issues of global warming and sustainable development and how these can be integrated into building design.
However, the challenge faced by architects was also highlighted during this meeting. Papy Kasomo, vice-president of the National Order of Architects, deplored the non-compliance with the law governing the profession. He mentioned that many people pretend to be architects without having the necessary training and registration with the Order. He stressed the importance of enforcing this law in order to guarantee the quality of construction and the safety of residents.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the knowledge acquired during this event. Some architecture students noted in particular that they now had a better understanding of the differences between architect, engineer, urban planner and surveyor. They also reported discovering essential concepts that are not taught in classrooms.
In addition to lectures and discussions, an auction of works of art by local artists was organized. These funds were used to finance the architecture competition and reward participants.
This conference therefore made it possible to highlight the importance of architecture in the construction of resilient and sustainable communities. He also highlighted the challenges faced by architects in respecting the law and ensuring the quality of construction. An essential step in promoting healthy and safe housing for all.
