Armed confrontations between militias in Goma: A new episode of violence shakes the region

The city of Goma, located in the territory of Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was the scene of violent armed clashes between two factions of patriotic “Wazalendo” militias this Monday, October 23. This confrontation, which began early in the afternoon, caused real chaos in the region.

According to local sources, these clashes are the result of a conflict of interest between the Wazalendo militia factions of the Alliance of Patriots for a Free and Sovereign Congo (APCLS) and the Union of Patriotic Defense Forces of Congo (UFDPC) present in the hills of Nyiragongo territory. Detonations of heavy and light weapons were heard, plunging the population into fear and uncertainty.

The Congolese armed forces (FARDC) were quickly mobilized to try to control the situation and apprehend the militiamen responsible for the fighting. The army spokesperson, Colonel Ndjike Kaiko, spoke of a conflict of interest between the Wazalendo following an order given by the military hierarchy. He assured that the armed forces were on their way to restore order and put an end to the clashes.

This violence led to the massive displacement of populations living in the Kanyaruchinya IDP camp. Some are heading towards the Don Bosco displaced persons site to find refuge. Injuries were also reported, including a woman evacuated to the Nyiragongo health center.

The fighting also had consequences on funeral rites, with delegations having to give up going to the Makao cemetery located in Nyiragongo territory.

Currently, gunshots are still being heard in the region, reflecting the continued instability and the threat these militias pose to the population.

This situation is all the more worrying as the Wazalendo militiamen are normally mobilized to fight the M23 rebels in the territories of Rutshuru, Nyiragongo and Masisi. The fact that they are turning against each other shows the instability and increasing fragmentation of armed groups in the region.

It is imperative that the Congolese authorities redouble their efforts to end these clashes and restore peace in the Goma region. Concerted action is needed to disarm militias, strengthen security and create an environment conducive to socio-economic development.

These tragic events also highlight the need for greater international attention and regional cooperation to support stabilization efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The international community must continue to support the Congolese government in its initiatives aimed at strengthening the rule of law, promoting national reconciliation and guaranteeing the security of all citizens.

In conclusion, it is crucial that security issues in the Goma region are addressed urgently and effectively. Clashes between militias are a threat to the stability and well-being of local populations, and require an immediate response from the Congolese authorities and the international community. Only concerted action can put an end to this violence and allow the population to live in peace and security.
