Presidential election in Liberia 2023: a close duel between George Weah and Joseph Boakai for the future of the country

Liberia Presidential Election 2023: George Weah versus Joseph Boakai

Liberian voters are preparing to return to the polls in November to choose their country’s future president. Two candidates stand out in this fierce race: George Weah, the current outgoing president, and Joseph Boakai, former vice-president of Liberia. While the results of the first round of voting are very close, with only a 0.4% difference between the two candidates, the outcome of this election remains uncertain.

George Weah, former football star and popular icon in Liberia, was elected in 2017 with a large majority. However, his record as head of state is mixed. Despite its promises of economic and social reforms, the country continues to face many challenges, such as extreme poverty which affects more than half of the population and the lack of basic infrastructure. Additionally, the controversial handling of his presence abroad has drawn criticism, notably when he spent almost two months out of the country to support his son at the FIFA World Cup.

Opposite George Weah, Joseph Boakai represents experience and political stability. Having served as vice-president for twelve years, he has in-depth knowledge of government mechanisms. However, at the age of 79, he may struggle to win over the younger electorate, in a country where the median age is just 18 and a half.

Although this presidential election is crucial to Liberia’s future, it is important not to forget the challenges the country faces. With a weakened economy and a still precarious level of development, the next president will have to tackle the task of reducing poverty, strengthening infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.

In this context, regional economic integration could be an avenue to explore. Liberia, like its neighbors Sierra Leone and Guinea, has valuable natural resources. Strengthening economic ties between these countries could promote mutual growth and help move away from dependence on foreign aid.

In conclusion, Liberia’s presidential election in 2023 is a crucial moment for the country. Voters will have to choose between the continuity represented by George Weah and the experience embodied by Joseph Boakai. Whatever the outcome, the next president will face many challenges to improve the country’s socio-economic situation. Regional economic integration could also play a key role in the development of Liberia and its neighbors.
