Kitshanga under the influence of the M23: an alarming situation

Kitshanga under the influence of the M23: a worrying situation

The city of Kitshanga, located in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is once again under the occupation of M23 rebels. After violent clashes with local armed groups, the rebels seized the city on Saturday October 21. This increase in fighting led to the death of two civilians and forced many residents to flee their homes.

The situation in Kitshanga remains precarious, despite a relative calm. The rebels have established their advanced positions on the outskirts of the city, in the localities of Ndondo, Kinyumba and Burungu. The local population lives in fear of reprisals and civil society in Masisi territory is calling for the intervention of the EAC (East African Community) force to protect civilians.

Residents who had taken refuge in places like the Catholic parish, the CBCA hospital and the MONUSCO and EAC bases have started to return to their homes, but many others still remain concentrated in Mweso, where conditions of life are precarious.

This new occupation of M23 in Kitshanga illustrates the fragility of the situation in the North Kivu region and the vulnerability of the civilian population. It is essential that authorities and international forces act quickly to restore security and protect the region’s residents.
