News in Sudan continues to cause deep concern around the world. In a recent statement, the US State Department strongly condemned the incessant bombings carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on residential areas in Omdurman, north of Khartoum. This strategy aims to force civilians to leave the area, which is still under the control of the Sudanese army.
At the same time, the RSF intensified their attacks on the town of Nyala, in South Darfur, as well as on the Hasahisa IDP camp in Central Darfur. These actions exacerbate the suffering of the Sudanese people already affected by years of conflict. The State Department is also concerned that the RSF are now using long-range weapons, increasing the risk of collateral damage.
Faced with this alarming situation, the United States calls for an immediate ceasefire and urges all parties involved to seek a peaceful and lasting solution. The United Kingdom, for its part, is concerned about the rise in violence in South Darfur, which appears to be taking on an ethnic dimension and resembling ethnic cleansing, largely perpetrated by militias affiliated with the RSF.
It is important to emphasize that this conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has already cost the lives of more than 9,000 people and resulted in the displacement of millions of people. The humanitarian consequences are catastrophic and require urgent action by the international community.
It is therefore essential to continue to closely monitor the situation in Sudan and support diplomatic efforts aimed at ending this deadly conflict. The protection of civilians and respect for human rights must remain at the heart of concerns, in order to allow the Sudanese people to regain the peace and stability they desperately need.
