“Liberia’s presidential election: a close race between George Weah and Joseph Boakai”

The presidential election in Liberia is looming, pitting George Weah, current outgoing president, against Joseph Boakai, former vice-president. Preliminary results from the first round revealed a very close race, with only 0.4% difference between the two candidates.

Former football star and Ballon d’Or winner George Weah captured the attention of young and working-class people when he won in 2017. However, his record as head of state has been mixed, with criticism regarding his prolonged absence from the country and continued economic difficulties.

On the other hand, Joseph Boakai can boast extensive experience in state, having held the position of vice-president for 12 years. However, his candidacy may be complicated by his advanced age of 79, in a country where the median age is 18 and a half.

Liberia, one of the least populated countries in West Africa, continues to face many challenges. More than half of the population lives in extreme poverty, infrastructure is poorly developed and access to electricity is limited. The country relies heavily on foreign aid and the exploitation of natural resources.

To get out of this situation, closer economic cooperation with neighboring countries could be beneficial. Economic integration between Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast could promote the development of border regions and stimulate the economy.

In any case, the future president of Liberia will face significant economic and social challenges, requiring innovative solutions and strong political will. Voters will therefore go to the polls in November to decide the destiny of their country.
