“Great Lakes writers use the power of words to sow peace”

Writing to bring about change: the commitment of Great Lakes writers to peace

In a region of Africa seriously affected by insecurity and conflict, a group of writers is committed to using the power of words to promote peace and living together. Bringing together authors from Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the literary project “Les Plumes Semeuses de Paix” has just given birth to an anthology which addresses the security issue in the Great Lakes region.

This anthology, published by Mlimani Editions, is the result of collaborative work between 24 writers from the region. It explores the devastating consequences of war, the suffering caused by recurring violence and proposes possible solutions to restore peace in the countries concerned. The objective of this initiative is to bring communities together, using art as a non-violent means of demanding peace.

The official release of the anthology is planned during a literary conference to be held at the French Institute of Bukavu. Under the theme “Can literature facilitate better cohabitation in the Great Lakes region?”, this event will be an opportunity to debate the impact of these committed writings on society and to consider how literature can contribute to better living together.

The authors of this anthology, such as Sylvestre Nsebgimana, Linda Maroy Elizabeth, Patrick Nzabonimpa, Viviane Muhirakeye and many others, have developed an engaged writing style that aims to incite change and promote peace. Their pen sows the seeds of collective consciousness and invites deep reflection on the security issues affecting the region.

To promote this literary work, a regional tour is planned, with presentations in schools, universities and cultural centers. These events will be accompanied by shows featuring local slam artists, who will bring the writers’ words to life and create an immersive artistic experience.

By using literature as a means of expression and awareness, Great Lakes writers have chosen to make their voices heard and contribute to the construction of a more peaceful and harmonious society. Their commitment is proof of the importance of words and the ability of literature to bring about change, even in the most difficult situations.

It is essential to salute and support these committed writers, as their work contributes to giving a voice to victims of conflict and promoting reconciliation and peaceful coexistence in the Great Lakes region. By encouraging the reading of this anthology and supporting literary initiatives that aim to promote peace, we are committed to making a lasting difference in society.
