Recent news in Cameroon has been marked by a tragic and mysterious event: the death of priest Jean-Jacques Ola Bébé. This priest, who was also a regular in the media, was found lifeless in front of his home in Yaoundé almost eight months ago. This case has raised serious concerns and called into question the NGO Action des Chrétiens pour l’abolition de la torture.

Priest Jean-Jacques Ola Bébé was known for his commitment and his intervention in the media on current affairs and social issues. Two weeks before his death, he spoke publicly about the disappearance of Martinez Zogo, a famous radio host. The priest denounced the manipulations and false information surrounding this affair.

Shortly after his statements, Jean-Jacques Ola Bébé confided to those close to him that he felt threatened and followed. On Friday February 3, his partner received a call from the gendarmerie informing him that the priest’s body had been transported to the morgue of the Yaoundé Central Hospital. For weeks, his family and members of the Byzantine Orthodox Catholic Church to which he belonged waited to identify the body.

Despite calls from the UN, UNESCO, Human Rights Watch and Christian Action for the Abolition of Torture, the Cameroonian authorities have not yet shed light on this matter. The question of whether there was a formal investigation remains unresolved. The NGO Acat France demands that the authorities take their responsibilities and carry out an investigation into the assassination of Jean-Jacques Ola Bébé, regardless of his status as a journalist or not.

This affair raises many questions and arouses deep concern about respect for human rights and freedom of expression in Cameroon. It is essential that the truth is revealed and those responsible for this crime are brought to justice. Transparency and justice are fundamental values to ensure peace and security in a country.

In conclusion, the tragic death of priest Jean-Jacques Ola Bébé in Cameroon raises troubling questions about freedom of expression and human rights in the country. It is imperative that the authorities take concrete steps to investigate this matter and bring those responsible to justice. Transparency and justice are essential to preserve peace and stability in the country.
