The oil sector in the province of North Kivu is facing a critical situation, with the cessation of fuel supplies from this Friday, October 20. Economic operators, represented by the Association of Oil Workers of North Kivu (APENOKI), have decided to observe a strike in order to make their demands heard by the government.
The main demand from oil companies is a new price structure for petroleum products, deemed not proportional to other requirements, particularly those related to imports. They are also demanding payment for the losses and shortfalls they have suffered since September 2023.
This strike is already having a significant impact on the population, with the cessation of fuel sales in all service stations in the city of Goma. Public carriers are particularly affected, while fuel retailers have increased the price of a liter of gasoline.
The president of APENOKI, Providence Muhiga, declares that its members are currently experiencing difficulties in supplying petroleum products. He says the situation cannot continue and that the strike will continue until the government responds to their demands and proposes a new price structure.
While waiting for this response, the few stocks available from certain tankers are reserved for the army, due to the military operational zone where North Kivu is located.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by economic operators in the oil sector in the DRC. It is essential that the government takes measures quickly to find a compromise and allow the resumption of fuel supplies in the province of North Kivu.
