“Niamey under tension: Confusion and differences over President Bazoum’s attempted escape”

Gunfire at dawn, movements of armored vehicles, attempted escape… The situation was particularly tense in Niamey in recent days. While the military junta announced that ousted president Mohamed Bazoum and his entourage had tried to escape, those close to the ex-president give a very different version of the events. According to them, their cell phones were confiscated and Mohamed Bazoum was separated from his family.

Two versions therefore oppose each other, creating additional confusion in an already unstable situation. The junta says the ousted president and his family had planned to flee to Nigeria with the help of foreign vehicles and helicopters. The junta spokesperson denounces this escape attempt as an irresponsible attitude on the part of Mohamed Bazoum.

However, those close to the ex-president tell a completely different story. According to them, Mohamed Bazoum was separated from his wife and son in the middle of the night, their phones were confiscated and two of their former bodyguards were arrested. The events allegedly took place during a police operation, during which shots were fired.

This rise in tension also comes at a time when a Nigerien judge had ordered the release of Mohamed Bazoum’s son, Salem Bazoum. Salem Bazoum’s lawyers had received the order which allowed them to demand his release. However, despite this court decision, Mohamed Bazoum’s relatives say that Salem is still detained and that his right to freedom of movement is not respected.

This complex and contradictory situation raises many questions about the true nature of events in Niamey. Political tensions and rivalries within the country appear to have reached a critical level, leaving the population uncertain about the direction Niger’s future will take.

In conclusion, it is clear that the situation in Niamey is far from being stabilized. The differences between the military junta and those close to ex-president Mohamed Bazoum only add to the confusion and uncertainty. Recent events raise questions about respect for the rule of law and human rights in the country. It is essential to closely monitor developments in the situation in Niger and to remain vigilant regarding respect for fundamental democratic principles.
