“Fight against electoral disinformation: the Congolese government and the European Union are committed to defending reliable information”

In an electoral context marked by disinformation and manipulation of opinion, the Congolese government and its partners are mobilizing to counter false information that seeks to influence the results. A round table on “information and foreign interference” was organized, at the initiative of the European Union, to discuss the challenges facing the country.

Congolese government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya stressed the importance of this initiative in the fight against disinformation during the electoral period. He also highlighted the disruptive role of Rwanda in the Congolese media landscape. According to him, it is crucial that journalists participate in these discussions and equip themselves with the necessary tools to recognize and combat fake news.

European Union Charge d’Affaires Mathilda Shedwin explained that the issue of disinformation and information manipulation is a global priority for the European Union. She underlined the European Union’s commitment to supporting the Congolese press as well as the authorities in their fight against disinformation.

This initiative takes place in a context where countries are increasingly confronted with fake news and the manipulation of information, particularly during electoral periods. The objective is to preserve the integrity of democratic processes and to provide reliable and objective information to the population.

It is essential that the media play an active role in fact-checking and disseminating quality information. Collaboration between the government, international partners and local media is therefore crucial to effectively combat disinformation and maintain citizen confidence in the democratic system.

In conclusion, it is encouraging to see the Congolese government and its partners actively engaged in the fight against disinformation. By strengthening resistance to fake news and foreign interference, they help ensure free and fair elections, as well as preserve citizens’ trust in the democratic process.
