“CIME Alert: Concerns about the rushed electoral campaign in the DRC”

The Electoral Integrity and Mediation Commission (CIME) of Maniema province in the Democratic Republic of Congo has expressed its concerns over the rushed electoral campaign carried out by political actors in the region. During an extraordinary meeting chaired by Bishop Ponio Kihua Changa, provincial coordinator of the CIME, the importance of respecting the electoral law and avoiding anticipated campaigns as well as provocative behavior such as threats, defamation and manipulation of youth.

This warning from the CIME echoes the alert launched by Jean-Pierre Feruzi, first deputy of the national deputy candidate Eddy Moket Sumaili, in the electoral constituency of Kailo. Feruzi called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to enforce electoral law fairly for all candidates.

The electoral campaign for the legislative and provincial elections in the DRC is scheduled to begin on October 27, 2023. However, the concerns raised by the CIME and the demands for strict application of the electoral law reflect the challenges faced by political actors in the province of Maniema.

It is essential that all candidates follow electoral rules to ensure fair and transparent elections. Anticipatory campaigns, threats and smears only compromise the integrity of the electoral process and undermine voter confidence.

The CIME plays a crucial role in mediation and enforcement of electoral standards. By urging political actors to respect the law, it helps to strengthen the legitimacy of the electoral process and promote a climate of confidence and stability.

It is important that the CENI, as the body responsible for organizing elections, ensures that all stakeholders respect the electoral rules in a fair and impartial manner. By doing so, it guarantees a democratic and credible electoral process, essential for the consolidation of democracy in the DRC.

The political stakes are high in Maniema province, and it is imperative that political actors act responsibly and respect democratic principles. The CIME and the CENI have an essential role to play in preserving the integrity of the electoral process and promoting a healthy and peaceful political environment.

It is therefore crucial that political actors take into account the concerns of the CIME and the population and act in accordance with the electoral law. This will guarantee free, fair and transparent elections that truly reflect the will of the Congolese people and will help consolidate democracy in the country.
