Title: Historic march in Algiers to support the Palestinian cause
For more than two years, Algeria has not seen such an authorized demonstration. This Thursday, October 19, thousands of Algerians responded to the call of several political parties and organizations to express their solidarity with the Palestinian population. This historic march took place in Algiers, as well as in other cities across the country, and made it possible to denounce the war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
Under a bright sun, the demonstrators covered nearly five kilometers through the streets of the Algerian capital. Among them were members of the National Liberation Front, the Front of Socialist Forces and the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), the country’s main union. All mobilized to denounce the massacres perpetrated by Israel and the collective punishment imposed on the population of Gaza.
The slogans chanted and the signs brandished during this march reflected the anger and indignation at the situation in Gaza. Protesters sharply criticized Western countries, particularly the United States, for their unconditional support for Israel and their silence on war crimes committed in Gaza. Arab countries, such as the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, which have normalized relations with Israel, have also been harshly criticized.
This mobilization in favor of Palestine testifies to the deep solidarity of the Algerian people towards the Palestinian people. It also recalls Algeria’s historic commitment to just causes and human rights.
The organization of this march, which was able to take place in compliance with legal authorization, also shows a desire to reconnect with the spirit of Hirak, this popular protest movement which shook Algeria in 2019. Despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Algerians have shown unwavering determination to make their voices heard.
This historic demonstration in Algiers is a powerful reminder of the importance of international solidarity in the face of injustice. It shows that the voices of oppressed people cannot be silenced and that citizen mobilizations can have a real impact on the international scene.
Algiers, today, vibrated to the rhythm of solidarity and hope. This march will go down in history as a moment of rallying and mobilization for the Palestinian cause.
