News in Ivory Coast: a new government confirmed after the appointment of Robert Beugré Mambé as Prime Minister
Ivory Coast recently announced the composition of its new government, following the appointment of Robert Beugré Mambé as Prime Minister. Overall, the majority of ministers from the previous government were reappointed.
Of the 33 ministers who make up the new government, most of them have retained their positions. However, some changes have been made. One of the main changes concerns the Sports Department, where the Prime Minister himself, Robert Beugré Mambé, will also serve as Minister of Sports. This decision follows the controversy linked to the flooding of the Ebimpé stadium, where the African Cup of Nations (CAN) is due to kick off on January 13. Paulin Danho, who was previously Minister of Sports, is therefore dismissed from his functions.
The appointment of Beugré Mambé as Head of Sports can be justified by his successful experience during the organization of the Francophonie Games in 2017. A few months before the CAN, his appointment shows a desire to succeed in this major sporting event.
Among the reappointed ministers, we find Téné Birahima Ouattara at the head of the Ministry of Defense, Jean Sansan Kambilé at Justice and General Vagondo Diomandé at the Interior. However, the Minister of National Reconciliation, Kouadio Konan Bertin, left the government, and his ministry itself was abolished.
Among other notable changes, Kandia Camara, former foreign minister, was elected head of the Senate, leading her to leave her post. She is replaced by a career diplomat. Two other career diplomats entered the government, notably Ambassador Kacou Léon Adom, who became the head of Ivorian diplomacy.
Despite these changes, a member of the government puts things into perspective by affirming that the country is no longer in crisis. Unresolved issues, such as the restitution of the bodies of victims of the crisis in the west of the country, will theoretically be taken care of by Myss Belmonde Dogo, Minister of Solidarity and Cohesion.
In short, Ivory Coast formed a new government after the appointment of Robert Beugré Mambé as Prime Minister. Although most ministers were reappointed, some changes were made to respond to the country’s current challenges and issues.
