Growing discontent in Burkina Faso: The trade union world is mobilizing against the government

The Burkinabe trade union world is making itself heard: growing discontent with the government

In Burkina Faso, the union world is in turmoil. During a meeting of the General Confederation of Workers of Burkina (CGTB), its general secretary, Moussa Diallo, strongly criticized the way the government operates as well as certain measures deemed “liberticidal”. A statement which reflects the generalized discontent within the inter-union.

At the heart of the CGTB’s concerns are the actions of the transitional government, known as MPSR 2. In a final statement, the union did not mince its words, describing some measures as “abusive”. In particular, it refers to forced disappearances of citizens, kidnappings perpetrated by armed and hooded individuals, forced recruitment, closure of press outlets and revisions of text deemed unacceptable. So many practices which are denounced as attacks on the fundamental freedoms of the Burkinabés.

Faced with these findings, the CGTB called for a meeting to be held at the end of the month in Ouagadougou, the country’s capital. This date, chosen deliberately, is not insignificant. Indeed, October 31 corresponds to Martyrs’ Day, a symbolic day which marks the fall of former President Blaise Compaoré in 2014, the result of his refusal to listen to the demands of the population.

This union mobilization clearly means that the Burkinabé people do not want history to repeat itself and stand up against the potential excesses of the current government. It demonstrates a desire to preserve democratic achievements as well as the rights and freedoms of citizens.

It is essential to emphasize that Burkina Faso is currently going through a delicate transition period, after the overthrow of President Compaoré. The country faces many challenges, such as insecurity, social tensions and economic difficulties. In this context, it is essential that the government in place listens to the legitimate demands of the unions and strives to find solutions to meet the needs of the population. Workers’ rights must be protected and respected, in order to promote a peaceful and constructive social climate.

The situation in Burkina Faso is an important reminder of the importance of the role of unions in society. They represent a collective voice that can voice workers’ concerns and contribute to social dialogue. In addition, they play a key role in the defense of fundamental rights and freedoms, thus making it possible to preserve the democratic balance.

In conclusion, the discontent expressed by the CGTB and the call for mobilization are the reflection of a civil society which refuses to be silent and which aspires to governance respectful of rights and freedoms.. It is necessary for the Burkinabe government to listen carefully to these demands and engage in constructive dialogue with the unions in order to find balanced and sustainable solutions for the well-being of all.
