The summit of the three major forest basins: Congo, Amazon and Borneo Mekong
From October 26 to 28, 2023, Brazzaville, the capital of Congo, will be the scene of an event of capital importance: the summit of the world’s three major tropical forest basins. The challenges of this meeting are multiple and many participants are expected. In this article, we will delve into the details of this unique event and discover the essential place of these green lungs in the regulation of the global climate.
The Kintélé International Conference Center, located in the suburbs of Brazzaville, was chosen as the meeting place for this major summit. The Minister of the Environment of Congo-Brazzaville, Arlette Soudan-Nonault, wanted to specify the delegations that will be present during this event. The States of the three forest basins, namely the Congo, the Amazon and Borneo-Mekong, will obviously be represented. But they won’t be the only participants. Delegations from other countries, such as the United States and France, are also expected.
The minister underlined the importance of the three forest basins in regulating the global climate. Indeed, these basins are home to 80% of the planet’s green lungs, that is to say forest ecosystems essential to the health of our planet. In addition, they represent three-quarters of the world’s biodiversity. It is therefore imperative to preserve these ecosystems in order to guarantee climatic balance and the preservation of biological diversity.
The objective of this summit is to put in place a strong declaration and to create a secretariat which will make it possible to sustain collaboration between the three forest basins. The United Nations and other international partners will support this initiative. This meeting aims to strengthen cooperation and find common solutions for the preservation of these vital natural resources.
In conclusion, the summit of the three major tropical forest basins represents a real opportunity for the States concerned to come together and work together for the preservation of these ecosystems essential to our planet. Biological diversity and climate regulation are crucial issues for our future. It is therefore essential to take concrete measures to preserve these precious green lungs. This summit is a step in the right direction, bringing together key players around a common goal: protecting our environment.
