Teachers displaced from Rutshuru territory: a strike movement for improved living conditions
Since Monday, October 16, teachers displaced from the territory of Rutshuru, in the North Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have been on strike. This decision was taken during a general meeting held last Sunday in Kanyarutshinya.
These teachers, who come from schools in the Rutshuru territory as well as Kibumba and Buhumba to the north of Nyiragongo, demand in particular the improvement of their living conditions in the various displacement sites where they are temporarily assigned to supervise the displaced students.
Their union claims to have addressed several demands to the Primary, Secondary and Vocational Education (EPSP) authorities for several weeks, without obtaining a satisfactory response. The strike is therefore a precautionary measure to put pressure on the authorities and obtain concrete solutions to their demands.
It is important to highlight the difficult reality that these displaced teachers experience. In addition to having to ensure the continuity of students’ education in precarious conditions, they face problems with housing, water and food supplies, as well as security risks.
In a situation of conflict and displacement, it is essential to guarantee access to education for children. However, it is equally crucial to ensure the well-being and rights of teachers, who play an essential role in the training of younger generations.
It is necessary for the authorities to take into account the legitimate demands of these displaced teachers and work to find lasting solutions to improve their living conditions. Such a response would demonstrate recognition and appreciation of the essential work provided by these teachers in difficult circumstances.
It is also essential that civil society, international organizations and the international community support these teachers in their demands and work together to ensure quality education in areas affected by conflict and displacement.
The situation of displaced teachers from Rutshuru territory is a poignant example of the challenges faced by teachers around the world, especially in regions affected by humanitarian crises and conflicts. It is crucial to recognize their work and provide them with the necessary support so that they can continue to carry out their educational mission in dignified and secure conditions.
In conclusion, it is essential to emphasize the importance of education and the role of teachers in situations of conflict and displacement. The strike by displaced teachers from Rutshuru territory is a call to action to improve their living conditions and guarantee access to quality education for all, even in the most difficult contexts.
