The UN warns of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza
In a context of growing tensions in the Middle East, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has sounded the alarm on the dramatic situation in Gaza. Following bloody attacks perpetrated by Hamas in Israel, the Israeli army has intensified its bombings on the Gaza Strip, causing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
The population of Gaza, already weakened by years of conflict, now finds itself facing shortages of water, electricity and other essential supplies. Basic infrastructure has been destroyed, leaving thousands of people homeless. Humanitarian agencies estimate that nearly 2 million Palestinians are directly affected by this situation.
Faced with this crisis, Israel and the United States reached an agreement to restore water supplies to the southern Gaza Strip. However, this measure is only a drop in the ocean of the urgent needs of the local population.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned Hamas’ actions, saying they did not represent the Palestinian people. He called for international solidarity and United Nations intervention to end the suffering of civilians.
In this context, Venezuela announced the sending of 30 tons of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro reaffirmed his unconditional support for the Palestinian cause and called for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of a humanitarian assistance corridor for the population.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed concern about the situation in the Middle East, calling the region “the edge of the abyss.” He called on Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and urged Hamas to release civilian hostages.
At the same time, the head of the World Health Organization called on Hamas to release civilian hostages, while condemning Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians.
The crisis in the Middle East has also provoked reactions on an international scale. In Brazil, more than a thousand people demonstrated in support of Israel and against the actions of Hamas, proclaiming “Hamas never again!” and “Hamas is terrorism!”.
In the midst of this chaos, voices are being raised to demand stronger international assistance for the people of Gaza. The challenge is immense, but the situation cannot be ignored. It is essential that the international community coordinates its efforts to provide adequate humanitarian assistance and to facilitate a dialogue that can end the suffering of all parties involved. The only way out of this crisis is to work together towards lasting peace.
