Kibali Gold Mines’ achievements in developing local communities
Since its establishment in the Haut-Uele province 14 years ago, the mining company Kibali Gold Mines has committed to respecting the requirements of the 2018 Mining Code by developing the local communities where its mines are located. At a press conference held on October 5, 2023, Kibali President and CEO Mark Bristow highlighted the company’s various achievements in this area.
In the education and capacity building sector, Kibali selected and trained 30 women in the production of personal protective equipment (PPE). Additionally, in partnership with local entrepreneurs, the company distributed 158 school kits in the villages of Gaako and Abimva. She also undertook the construction of 6 different schools.
Regarding health, water and sanitation, Kibali has tapped 12 water sources and drilled 13 wells. Additionally, it built two mortuaries in Durba and Aru to meet the needs of the local population.
Kibali also completed several development projects, such as the renovation of 76 km of agricultural feeder roads opened during the third quarter. It also completed the construction of two modern markets in Moku and Nzopi. In agriculture, Kibali is renovating an agro-industrial complex including a chicken coop with a capacity of 5,000 chickens and a mill to produce animal feed for farmers in the community. Additionally, the company has launched a cocoa project on 100 hectares in Faradje. It also renovated community infrastructure, built a community stadium in Durba and carried out 15 boreholes in different villages.
Regarding Kibali’s local engagement, the company implemented eight projects in accordance with the mandated specifications, and launched 44 community projects under the 0.3% allocation funds. It also began the renovation and construction of community infrastructure, such as a stadium and mortuaries in Durba and Aru. She has completed 85% of the resettlement of the Kalinva community. Additionally, it has started to implement the Oere Resettlement Action Plan (RAP).
