“DRC: Persistent armed conflicts and attacks against civilians put the population at risk”

Title: The alarming situation of armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Introduction :
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is faced with a tragic reality characterized by armed conflicts which have persisted for several years. Despite the efforts made to achieve a cessation of hostilities, recent events reveal a worrying situation. In this article, we will highlight recent information on attacks carried out by the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) against civilians in the DRC.

The M23 and attacks against civilians:
According to the report of the Secretary General of the United Nations, the M23 continued to attack civilians despite the cessation of hostilities. According to the report’s alarming figures, the M23 carried out 97 attacks, causing the death of 124 people, including 15 women and 11 children. These figures demonstrate the vulnerability of civilians to violence perpetrated by armed groups.

Multiple clashes in the region:
In addition to the M23 attacks, clashes have increased between this armed group, the FDLR and other local groups calling themselves Wazalendo. The region is therefore experiencing an escalation of violence despite the efforts made to maintain peace. In addition, the M23 is said to have attempted to extend its area of operations to the South Kivu province, thus exacerbating tensions and risks for the local population.

Failure to comply with agreements and the consequences:
Unfortunately, the M23 did not respect the demands of the Luanda communiqué of November 2022, which provided for the withdrawal from all the areas it occupies. This breakdown of agreements seriously compromises efforts to pacify the region and exposes civilians to greater danger and suffering.

The FDLR and their impact on civilians:
The FDLR, another armed group present in the DRC, was also responsible for attacks against civilians, causing the deaths of 13 people, including a woman and three children. These figures underline the urgent need to act to put an end to the activities of these armed groups operating in the region.

Conclusion :
Faced with this alarming situation, it is imperative that concrete actions be taken to protect civilians in the DRC. There is a need to strengthen peacemaking efforts and put in place robust security mechanisms to prevent further violence. The international community must provide active support to resolve the conflicts in the DRC and provide a safer and more peaceful future for the local population.
