Armed conflicts around the world continue to cause suffering, destruction and loss of life. Terrorist attacks, civil wars and heightened political tensions continue to make headlines and remind us of the fragility of peace in many regions.
In the Middle East, the situation is particularly worrying. Since the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel, a spiral of violence has begun, causing the deaths of numerous people and sowing terror among civilian populations. The media and social networks unrestrainedly relay words of hatred and revenge, thus fueling an endless cycle of violence.
But the Middle East is not the only place where armed conflicts rage. In Africa too, many countries are plunged into turmoil. In Sudan, for example, war crimes, rape and ethnic cleansing have been reported in Darfur, displacing millions of people. Thousands of lives have been lost and famine and the collapse of health systems are making the situation even worse, leading to the deaths of thousands of children.
The central Sahel is also affected by armed conflicts. In Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, violence seems to take precedence over any attempt at a political resolution of the crises. Military forces take precedence over peaceful solutions, without worrying about the long-term consequences. The reconquest of territories is desired, but the means and resources necessary to maintain peace in the long term are lacking. Trust and peaceful coexistence between local populations are put aside, to the detriment of the stability and well-being of residents.
It is crucial to confront this exaltation of violence and seek realistic and lasting solutions. Military force cannot be the only response to conflicts. It is essential to establish dialogue with local populations, strengthen institutions and foster mutual trust to ensure lasting peace.
Recent events in the Middle East, Africa and the central Sahel remind us of the need to promote peace and work together to prevent armed conflict. International solidarity and respect for human rights must be at the heart of our actions to end the horrors of war and build a future of peace and justice for all.
