The truth about accusations of supporting the EAC in the fighting in North Kivu

The resurgence of hostilities in North Kivu is once again making headlines. The fighting between M23 terrorists and local militiamen in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo gave rise to strong accusations and controversies. However, Major Albert Wanyoni, spokesperson for the East African Community (EAC) force, recently denied any involvement of EAC forces in the clashes.

Speaking to Radio Okapi, Major Wanyoni affirmed that the EAC contingents operate according to their mandate, which is to ensure the security of civilians and maintain stability in the region. He described the allegations against the EAC forces as a propaganda campaign aimed at discrediting the regional mission.

Major Albert Nyakundi, also a spokesperson for the regional force, stressed that Kenyan, Ugandan, South Sudanese and Burundian units did not use force against the warring armed groups. On the contrary, they have intensified their patrol operations to preserve the security of the population and deter all parties from resorting to violence.

These assertions seek to reestablish the truth and counter the accusations that have been circulating since the resumption of hostilities. The M23, supported by the Rwandan army, claims that the Burundian EAC unit is fighting alongside local militiamen. For their part, local armed groups accuse the Kenyan and Ugandan contingents of supporting the M23 to block their advances.

It is essential to disentangle fact from fiction in this complex situation. Statements from EAC force spokespersons underscore their commitment to upholding their mandate and not taking sides in the ongoing conflict. However, it is important to conduct a thorough investigation to clarify the situation and ensure that all actors take the necessary measures to protect civilians and promote peace.

In conclusion, the resurgence of hostilities in North Kivu continues to give rise to tensions and accusations between the different parties involved. The statements by the spokespersons of the EAC force seek to set the record straight and reiterate their mission to maintain security and stability in the region. It is important to conduct a thorough investigation to shed light on these events and find lasting solutions to end the violence.
