“Return to normality in Kiwanja and Kitshanga: hope for lasting peace after the clashes”

News: Return to normality in Kiwanja after the fighting between the M23 and local militiamen

Life has timidly returned to normal in Kiwanja, Rutshuru territory, the day after clashes between the M23 rebel movement and local militiamen. The fighting took place in the localities of Kinyandoni and Nkwenda, but did not reach the Bwiza area where the M23 rebels are concentrated.

According to several local sources, a coalition of local armed groups has already taken control of the capital of Kiwanja as well as other surrounding villages. However, they were unable to progress towards Bwiza, where the M23 rebels took refuge, mixing among the thousands of civilians, members of herder families.

In the territory of Masisi, in Kitshanga, activities have resumed for two days. Several local sources report the presence of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in this strategic city. The troops have been redeployed in the region for two days already, according to these same sources.

However, the spokesperson for the governor of North Kivu denied the presence of the FARDC in Kitshanga. Lieutenant-Colonel Guillaume Ndjike affirmed that the army continues to observe the ceasefire and cannot be present in Kitshanga.

Despite this confusion over the presence of military troops, the population remains hopeful that the situation will stabilize in the region. Many residents long for a return to peace and security, so that they can resume their daily activities normally.

It is essential that the competent authorities take measures to put an end to these clashes and guarantee the security of civilian populations. Armed conflicts hinder the socio-economic development of the region and cause unnecessary suffering to the population.

It is also important that the international community supports efforts to bring peace to the North Kivu region by supporting reconciliation and dialogue initiatives between the different factions.

In conclusion, the situation in Kiwanja and Kitshanga illustrates the challenges that the Democratic Republic of Congo faces to ensure the security of its population. It is crucial to work for a return to lasting peace in the region, to allow communities to rebuild their lives and develop.
