Qatar and TotalEnergies sign historic agreement to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to France
In a major announcement, QatarEnergy and French company TotalEnergies have signed two 27-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements. This agreement provides for the supply of up to 3.5 million tonnes of LNG per year from Qatar to France, from 2026.
These agreements reflect Qatar’s continued commitment to European markets, particularly the French market, and contribute to strengthening France’s energy security. LNG deliveries will begin in five years and are planned for a duration of 27 years.
Subsidiaries of QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies will be responsible for implementing these agreements, which are based on LNG production from the North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS) projects. TotalEnergies holds respective shares of 6.25% and 9.375% in these projects, thus ensuring regular and reliable supply for France.
Qatar is one of the world’s leading LNG producers, alongside the United States and Australia. Traditionally, its main customers have been Asian countries, but the country is increasingly looking to diversify its exports to Europe. This trend has strengthened in recent years, with growing demand from European countries seeking alternatives to Russian gas.
The signing of this agreement with TotalEnergies is part of this market diversification strategy for Qatar. Last November, the country announced a similar deal to supply LNG to Germany for 15 years.
This agreement between QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies is therefore a crucial step in strengthening ties between France and Qatar in the energy sector. It demonstrates the desire of both parties to develop a solid partnership and to contribute to France’s energy security.
In conclusion, this agreement between Qatar and TotalEnergies opens new perspectives for France’s LNG supply and strengthens economic relations between the two countries. These agreements are an opportunity for Qatar to diversify its exports to Europe and consolidate its position as a world leader in the liquefied natural gas sector.
