“Niger: Growing isolation on the international scene after the coup – What are the next steps to escape the doldrums?”

Niger has faced an increasingly isolated situation on the international scene since the coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum two and a half months ago. The country, which is still under sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States, has recently seen its relations deteriorate with several partners, including France, the United States and the United Nations.

The expulsion of the United Nations coordinator in Niger is the latest event. The ruling military accuses the UN Secretary General of having planned underhanded maneuvers at the instigation of France to harm the country. Furthermore, France began to withdraw its soldiers from Niger this week, in accordance with the demands of the CNSP (National Council for the Salvation of the People).

On Tuesday, the United States officially declared events in Niger a coup, leading to the removal of $500 million in economic aid. This action by the United States reinforces the country’s isolation on the international scene.

Faced with these growing tensions with their former partners, Niger is now turning to new allies. It has moved closer to its western neighbors, Mali and Burkina Faso, also ruled by the military. The three countries recently created an Alliance of Sahel States. It is questionable whether Niger will also seek closer ties with Russia, but for now it is too early to tell.

It is interesting to note that the Russian ambassador was recently received in Niamey by several personalities, including General Tiani and the Minister of Defense. This meeting could indicate signs of rapprochement between Niger and Russia.

This development in international relations has significant impacts on the socio-economic situation of Niger. The country is largely dependent on international aid for its development and growing isolation risks undermining the progress made so far.

It is therefore crucial that Niger seeks to diversify its alliances and find new partners to support its economic development and strengthen its geopolitical position. It remains to be seen what next steps the Nigerien government will take to emerge from its isolation and maintain strong international relations.
