In a recent decision, the Supreme Court in Algeria rejected the cassation appeals filed by the lawyers of Ihsane El Kadi, founder and director of Maghreb Emergent and Radio M. This decision caused great consternation among his lawyers who did not ‘expected no less.

Indeed, Ihsane El Kadi was sentenced in April 2023 to 5 years in prison, including 3 years, for “collecting funds from abroad”. This sentence was increased on appeal two months later, bringing it to 7 years in prison, including 5 years. This affair also led to the dissolution of the El Kadi press group by the courts.

According to Maître Pierre Brunisso, one of Ihsane El Kadi’s lawyers, the Supreme Court’s decision is a real “massive blow” for his client. He emphasizes that the decision is legally meaningless and is clearly political, aimed at repressing the remarkable work of this journalist.

Ihsane El Kadi, a respected figure known for his critical stances towards power, has been incarcerated since December 2023 and will now have to spend the next four years behind bars, his sentence now being final.
